What this superhero movie lacks in blue spandex, it makes up for in angst

The Pitch: Three high school guys are given super powers and a seemingly endless supply of camera batteries in this found-footage superhero movie.

What It Really Is: The movie is impressive if you go in expecting just another comic book flick. The story escalates and heads into some surprisingly dark territory before the inevitable, and awesome, final showdown which (spoiler alert) is awesome. They get around the problem of most found-footage movies by avoiding the dreaded “shakey” cam via super powesr. (The camera floats!) Much of the movie, including the acting, seems real. Too bad the somewhat shoddy special effects constantly remind us that this is a movie and not the world’s best episode of MTV’s Made.

Fun Fact: First, you should know it was written by Max Landis, son of director John Landis. Second, you should know the E in “Chronicle” is silent, according to the know-it-all ticket lady at the box office.

Who’s It For: Those who have given up on the comic book movie genre, children who can’t understand that this isn’t real, little brothers, and real super heroes will enjoy this fun February movie. Just don’t look too closely at the screen during the action, nitpickers.
