A well-done, straight-forward documentary, Dogtown and Z-Boys follows the rise of the Zephyr skateboarding team—and skateboarding as a whole—beginning with Venice, California, in the ’70s. The DVD is equally direct, with few extra features. The highlight of the extra clips comes from the “raw” skate footage: the original Zephyr team members still skating in pools and doing photo shoots like the punks they used to be. Unfortunately, we’re given too little extra footage and the remaining special features are pretty standard—trailers, production notes, scene selection. For such a good movie, the DVD doesn’t deliver enough to make it a better experience.
