The new action-comedy Double Take made us make our own double take—hold on, it doesn’t suck? Judging from the silly trailer you’d think it’s just another moronic buddy picture, or even worse, a Martin Lawrence movie. Instead, Double Take is a hip-hop Midnight Run: a generous grab-bag of laughs, explosions, and suspense that’s a perfect match for a bucket of popcorn.

Orlando Jones plays an honest Manhattan banker who is having a bad day: He’s mugged, discovers drug money funneling though his bank, and gets framed for murder. Innocent and on the run, Jones convinces maniac street con Freddy Tiffany, played to the hilt by Eddie Griffin, to exchange identities with him so that he can escape to Mexico and clear his name. This hackneyed premise snowballs into a topsy turvy game of cat and mouse, as Griffin and Jones’ characters try to elude capture, leaving the audience to guess who exactly wants to help, and who wants to hurt, Jones’ character.
