The “$20 million fart joke” finally comes to DVD in a two-disc set that shows that while his good judgment sometimes wanes in his movies, Kevin Smith knows what DVD connoisseurs want. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is still the overly back-slappy in-joke you remember, but there’s some funny stuff lurking amid the gag reels, cut scenes, and commentary herein.
Disc one contains the movie itself and the commentary, which is provided by Smith, producer Scott Mosier, and co-star Jason Mewes—actually, Smith and Mosier provide the commentary, Mewes just mumbles incoherently and removes clothing (or so we hear). Although at times they’re guilty of thinking their movie works a lot better than it actually does, they are candid enough to reveal some interesting details (other than pointing out more in-jokes that are so in-jokey that even people on the “in” might not get them, which, you know, is a totally worthwhile effort). Disc Two contains the good stuff, as Smith seems to have swept up every scrap off the editing room floor and even taken the time to personally introduce and explain each clip. Where else can you see Marvel Comics’ Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada making out with Eliza Dushku? Add to this a funny collection of blown takes and tons of music videos and “making of” specials, and JSBSB might just make you forget you’re watching a movie that doesn’t give a shit if you give a shit or not.
