Drawing Flies, the “lost” View Askew movie (or, as the intro proclaims it, the “red-headed step child of View Askew”) gets a DVD release in order to satisfy Kevin Smith completists (Smith co-executive produced it) and indie film buffs. If you’re neither, you probably won’t care.

The story of a bunch of Canadian slackers who venture into the woods in a search for Bigfoot, it looks like a student film and suffers from the many flaws usually associated with them (for those who never went to film school—and count your lucky stars you didn’t—that means bad sound, rough camerawork, and forced acting). Although it’s funny in parts, you can’t tell if the psuedo-philosophy in the story is meant to be a joke, too. Evidence suggests that it isn’t, and so none of it comes across. With so much working against it, Drawing Flies needs to give you more and doesn’t. We can’t begrudge anyone their right to make a movie if they want to, just don’t expect your rough drafts to find an audience beyond the indie film community.
