Resident Evil does its job as a horror film based on an already scary video game. With Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez battling flesh-eating zombies and raging dogs, the action takes the attention away from some of the lesser qualities of the movie—the plot holes, the poor performances—and makes for an entertaining flick. Unfortunately, the DVD doesn’t have that many special features, and the ones they do have are mostly worthless.
For a movie that’s full of visual effects, the “making of” feature doesn’t get into the details of how the movie was actually made. Instead, interviews with the characters detail how each actor and actress felt about their respective parts. Some of the production crew talk about the transition from a video game to a movie, but again, no details and no footage, just talking. There’s a Slipknot video, which is a good fit for the dark movie, but nothing special. Unfortunately, the best feature is the shortest, in which the test shots for the zombie closeups are shown in succession to some creeped-out music. Truly disgusting stuff, but not enough to take the focus off of the rest of the package.
