After sweeping through Middle-Earth and the Oscars, Return of the King is finally landing in your living room. Just be wary; it’ll no doubt start attracting four-disc friends and relatives by the holiday season. For now, the two-disc release comes with three ordinary features on the making of the film. “A Director’s Vision” follows Peter Jackson from scruffy no-name to scruffy Oscar hog, “A Filmmaker’s Journey” follows Tolkien’s words from book to big-screen trilogy, and a National Geographic special links characters from the trilogy to historical figures (Aragorn gets William Wallace, Gandalf gets Ben Franklin, Frodo gets no one). There are also original trailers, TV spots, and Internet features. But even LOTR fiends with a near-limitless appetite for elven action and Hostess pies should rent this set with caution and sit on their wallets until the 28-disc box set of the apocalypse drops in a couple of months.
