This was an important season for the addictive CW show that we can't believe we still watch. Superman Returns had come out a few months earlier, which should have signaled the death knell for this 6-year-old show about Clark Kent's adolescence. But Smallville upped the stakes by unleashing new villains from the Phantom Zone and taking the first steps toward the Justice League (featuring the Green Arrow and other Super Friends). As usual, Lex and his father, Lionel, are solid, as Lex continues to become more evil, while dad remains a devious mystery. Some of the story lines are getting stale—Lana Lang is still cute, but she's quickly becoming overshadowed by a reborn sexy Chloe. The only real downside, apart from a few throwaway episodes, are the extras, which focus way too heavily on the Green Arrow, and mobisodes that are clearly more marketing-driven than story. Still that negativity and nit-picking melts away when we see Lois Lane… And not just because Erica Durance made the cover of Maxim. (Okay, that does have something to do with it.)
