It's never easy making a sequel to such an innovative horror film, but 28 Weeks Later ups the violence and action and shocked the hell out of us. (Take notes, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.) After an undetermined amount of time since the first outbreak of the Rage virus destroyed Londonkidding, it's in the title, retardthe U.S. military is tasked with repopulating the city. We're keeping it light on the spoilers since no one saw this at the box office, but the story is based around a family headed by Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting's Begbie) starting a new life in the new "safe zone." Then things get totally fucked up and no one is safe. The virus, which infects within 20 seconds of contact, mutates a bit and is unleashed into the new utopia, causing the military to call a code redeliminate everything that moves, infected or not. There are moments of paralyzing action, like military snipers picking off people one by one, helicopter blades mowing down a field of blood-spewing creatures, and a pitch-black detour through the tubes littered with burnt corpses. Plus, it's smart. These aren't zombies, they're humans infected with a virus that makes you very angry (enough to puke blood); so before you go poking holes in the story, remember that basic premise. Watching this in Blu-ray adds to the gory glory, making us thankful and nauseous. The extras are somewhat unremarkable, but the movie is completely unpredictable and horrifying, proving there's a new dawn of the dead upon us. Here's hoping we get to see what happens in 2.4 years later! (Also available for noobs on regular DVD.)
