Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First Season

Release Date:
11/13/2007
Star Rating:
★★★★
The breakout HBO hit (haven't heard that phrase in a while, right?) featuring the music stylings of New Zealand's "fourth most popular folk parody band" is one of the funniest shows on TV. The band, fronted by Jemaine and Bret, along with their inept and hilarious manager, Murray, manage to appeal to both skinny-pants-wearing hipsters and people like us who hate those skinny-pants-wearing bastards. Jemaine and Bret have been doing this routine together for years, and unlike Louis C.K.'s HBO abomination Lucky Louie, the Conchords stand-up act translates perfectly into 12 half-hour episodes. Songs like "She's So Hot, BOOM!" "Business Time," "Mutha Uckas," "Frodo," and the genius "If You're Into It" prove that Tenacious D–like parody is often better than the real thing. The only major letdown is there are no extras. The least they could have done was thrown on some music videos or behind-the-scenes junk we actually wanted to see for something like this. So if you have HBO already, just punch up the episodes On Demand and save the effort of having to get off the couch to put in the discs. The rest of you without HBO—and that number's growing—it's time to rock the party.
