Friday Night Lights: The Second Season

Release Date:
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Star Rating:
★★
The Skinny: The NBC show with so much promise after an incredible first season runs out of story and turns into Dawson's Creek–lite. (Or so we imagine. We never watched that crappy show.)

Here's What We Think Happened: The show's creators and writers believed the highly praised but low-rated show was destined for cancellation, so they blew their entire wad on the first season. When it was miraculously picked up for a second season, they panicked and turned to soap operas for inspiration. Now that it's been picked up for a third season, and the writers have had plenty of time to chill during the strike, they have no more excuses. Stick to football, jerks!

The Good: This show still has the hottest cast of women on TV, especially with the addition of Kim Smith and the sexy Daniella Alonso as QB-One Matt Saracen's grandma's live-in nurse. Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, and Aimee Teegarden are still smokin'!

The Bad (POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!): Of all the horrible after-school-special plots, FNL's resident nerd Landry Clarke's legal woes after an accidental murder is by far the lamest. Though it's closely rivaled by Minka Kelly's character's transformation into a born-again Christian and wheelchair-bound Jason Street's turn as a car salesman, featuring the most blatant product placement we've ever seen.

Best Extra: Aside from some throwaway deleted scenes and a commentary, there's an interview with the cast at some TV festival. If this would have included a 30-minute pillow fight with all the gorgeous coeds, it would be a must-own four-disc set. But since it doesn't, either rent or ignore.
