Matt Groening struck lightning twice when Futurama became a success, and it paid off for all of us. Now he’s put out its first season on DVD and has us chomping at the bit for more. Many of the 13 episodes are enhanced by an assortment of worthy features and all of them include commentary. Get a thorough look at the animation process with the main featurette (aptly titled “Featurette”) and marvel at the attention to detail necessary just to make something as simple as background images. Viewing stills from the pilot-episode script (complete with editor’s notes) is not only edifying, but also guilt-provoking when you discover how hard these guys worked just to make you laugh. There are also storyboards with notes that take you step-by-step through the development stages. If you’re still itching for more, you can get plenty of insight from the commentary—as well as plenty of self-congratulatory laughter throughout each episode to boot.
