Ginger Snaps

Unless you troll art house theaters or live in Canada, odds are you’ve never heard of Ginger Snaps. So, while the DVD has nothing in the way of special features to recommend it, it does offer people (like us) a chance to see what we missed the first time around. Although you can just hear the pitch meeting that spawned it (“It’s Heathers meets An American Werewolf in London!”), Ginger Snaps is a surprisingly cool movie. It’s the story of two goth sisters obsessed with death and happy to be high school misfits until one of them gets attacked by a werewolf. Her transformation from recluse to sexually voracious diva is humorously attributed to puberty by all those around her until, of course, she starts sprouting fangs and a tail. While the last half isn’t nearly as good as the first, Ginger Snaps is a cool horror flick without tons of self-referential in-jokes.
