The longer the war in Iraq continues, the longer any schmuck with a viewpoint and a video camera will have to head east and document his own personal account of the troops on the ground. Give Gunner Palace credit for not relying too heavily on liberal bias and letting the subjects tell the story, just don't give it credit for maintaining a coherent storyline through its incongruous clips. And definitely don't give it credit for its DVD release. In addition to the movie, there's a half hour's worth of deleted scenes that offer more soldier confessions, shout-outs, and homecomings—although it's nothing you haven't already seen in the feature. The only other supplemental material comes courtesy of three freestyles by soldiers rapping about their combat experience. Unfortunately, the rambling verses make Vanilla Ice sound like Ice-T—and the war sound like a G-Unit record release party.
