If you think Harry Potter was the Colonel on M*A*S*H, then odds are you don’t really give a crap about the movie version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But guess what? Your girlfriend, niece, nephew, legal ward, or whatever is dying to see it, which means you’d better prepare yourself. And we know that you’re too busy restoring classic cars, restocking your weapon shed, and winning Tough Man competitions to actually have read the book.

Words like “Quidditch,” “Muggles,” and “HufflePuff” might cause severe flashbacks of nights spent playing Dungeons & Dragons in lieu of seeking a consensual mate, but stay strong. For a children’s film, this is really well done. In a world where Steven Spielberg is digitally removing any impure thoughts from his movies, Harry Potter doesn’t skimp on some of the dark stuff that might scare kids. Wussy kids, sure, but kids nonetheless. The casting is right on, from non-annoying child actors to the likes of Richard Harris, Robbie Coltrane, and, especially, Alan Rickman. The movie does a good job of translating the book (umm, so we’re told…), and it’s sure to keep the cultural phenomenon going. Before you wise off, remember that your Dad didn’t know what the big deal about Star Wars was, either. So suck it up.
