Any publicity is good publicity, and A Home at the End of the World got plenty of both when producers decided to cut a scene featuring Colin Ferrell's flaccid bagpipe. But exposed superstar penis or not, this emotional roller coaster simply isn't worth the controversy. When two childhood friends from ClevelandJonathan, the gay one (played by Dallas Roberts), and Bobby, the asexual one (played by Ferrell)reunite in New York as adults in the 1980s, Bobby falls for Jonathan's roommate (Robin Wright Penn) and complicates the living situation. Occasionally there are funny momentsthe film's heavy drug use results in a nine-year-old on acid and Sissy Spacek awkwardly getting high with her teenage son and his friendbut for the most part, this is a traditional standstill drama. The bi-curious love triangle heads through euphoric highs (pregnancy, love, friendship) and crippling lows (family deaths, breakups, long running time) but still winds up right back at homewhich is exactly where we wanted to be all along.
