The Pitch: A washed-up college basketball coach (Gene Hackman) takes a high school job in Jerkwood, Indiana where he inspires average players to play beyond their potential.

What It Really Is: A sports movie classic that actually deserves its status. Set in 1951, this film has texture like few other sports movies and is by far one of Hackman’s greatest performances...which is saying a lot since the guy has been in 3 million movies. It also put Dennis Hopper back in the spotlight as a down-and-out drunk given a second chance. If you find some of it cheesy or over-dramatic, it’s important to note that almost every sports movie since 1986 has copied Hoosiers. So, in your face, hater.

Sure, It’s A Team Sport...But, Let’s Face Facts: The Huskers wouldn’t have won anything without Jimmy. So say all you want about passing and unity. When it comes down to it, you need a star.
