When Robin Williams and Al Pacino try to outwit each other against the backdrop of eternal light in Insomnia under the direction of Mementos Christopher Nolan, we pay attention. When Nolan and Pacino sit down for tea and an unscripted conversation about the making of Insomnia, were snoozing hard. And so it goes with most of the extras here, none of which stand out like the movie does on its own. A lot of Nolans commentary teeters too close to a film-class lecture, and the deleted scenes justify their exemption: They have nothing to do with the finished product, and its difficult to understand why they were made at all. The DVD compilers also attempt to give insight into the lives of real insomniacs with their documentary Eyes Wide Open, which ends up as a 20/20 newsmagazine-style specialsans Barbara Walters.
