What a letdown. Normally, Criterion Collection DVDs give you more supplemental material than you could possibly watch in four lifetimesexcept, it should be noted, in the case of Insomnia. Norwegian TV spots? Thats it? Never should Norwegian TV spots ever be considered a special feature, no matter what theyre advertising. That being said, Insomnia is still a movie you havent seen and should, at least before the Hollywood remake comes out next month.
Told in a sparse style and clocking in at only 97 minutes, Insomnia is an effectively creepy thriller that does more with tone and mood than twisty plot points and heavy dialogue. Stellan Skarsgard (Ronin, Good Will Hunting) stars as a detective investigating a murder while his inability to sleep in the Land of the Midnight Sun slowly chips away at his sanity. Just consider this while you watch: The planned remake stars Al Pacino and Robin Williams, two actors for whom the word subtlety means shouting only 90 percent of their dialogue. Once again, probably best to stick with the original.
