Amidst the onslaught of transformers, superheroes, pirates, biblical floods, and Hogwarts, we now have a feel-good coming-of-age sexual comedy filled with laughs, insight, and genuine human emotion. What a concept! How did this little gem ever sneak into theaters this summer? But Dwights delights as one of the season's surprise hits, a winning combination of memorable moments that go straight to the heart. An Australian import about one of those overbearing mothers (Brenda Blethyn) who tries to impose her will on her teenage son's (Khan Chittenden) hormonal coming-out party, it doesn't break new ground but still comes up with its own voice. True this is anything but a normal family, with mom as a sometimes frustrated and very dirty comedienne dominating the scene and always being at the center of attention. But her son Tim meets and beds a feisty girl (Emma Booth) who becomes a "threat" to the family dynamic (which also includes a mentally disabled younger brother, expertly played by Richard Wilson) as his needs and his mom's ambition collide. At no time do we ever feel there is anything but love in this family unit, but the sometimes-heartbreaking complications of growing up and moving on create their very own recognizable problems in every corner of the globe, as this saucy Aussie flick demonstrates. It's small and needs strong word-of-mouth to be discovered, but with a winning screenplay, solid direction, plus the great Blethyn and a superior young cast, what more could you want from a movie whose only special effect is humanity.
