Jackass Presents Mat Hoffman's Tribute to Evel Knievel

Release Date:
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Star Rating:
★★★★
The Skinny: Evel Knievel has been dead for almost a year now, but it's clear his spirit of total disregard for the sake of entertainment still lives on. BMX legend Mat Hoffman gathered up a bunch of his most extreme buddies, got them all fired up on energy drinks and watched them perform all sorts of gnarly stunts.

Reminded Us Of… Thanks to Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine it definitely has the Jackass vibe, but no one craps in their pants or takes out their genitals, so it's a little more…civilized.

The Good: Just about all of the stunts are a blast to watch, mainly because they're so huge and dangerous. Sure the X-Games are fun, but something tells us they're not going to be adding Jumping out of a Plane Without a Parachute to their list of events any time soon. Plus, even if you saw it when it aired on MTV, you'll be glad to hear all of the bad language in its un-bleeped glory.

The Bad: As with any stunt DVD, once you've seen it, you know what happens, which takes away most of the suspense. Unless you have that amnesia Drew Barrymore had in 50 First Dates, in which case it's the best DVD ever.

Best Extra: "Knoxville's Hospital Visit" is hilarious, mostly because of the nervous small talk Johnny makes while sitting in an ambulance with a torn urethra. The tribute to Stephen Murray, a British BMX pro who suffered a career-ending injury back in June '07 is either really inspiring or really depressing, depending on how you look at stuff like that.
