Release Date:
07/11/2008
Directed by: Eric Brevig
The Skinny: In a semiremake/semihomage to Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel, Brendan Fraser stars as a research scientist who drags his nephew (Josh Hutcherson) and a hot Icelandic hiker (Anita Briem) down into the depths of the earth. Once there, they battle your typical dinosaurs, man-eating plants, and radioactive sparrows.
The Good: Presented in "Real 3-D," the movie shows how far the gimmick has come in terms of overall quality, but…
The Bad: …It's just too bad that the creature effects and alien landscapes are still too cartoonish to thrill anyone over the age of 6. Ditto for the story. This is pretty routine stuff—exactly like those IMAX 3-D movies made solely to show off the 3-D, while story and acting took distant backseats. Fraser tries his best, though. Bless him.
Anita Minute Here: There's a creepy undercurrent in the movie after the 13-year-old nephew calls "dibs" on said Icelandic hottie, something she later indicates she has absolutely no problem with.
Theater, DVD, or TNT in Five Years? If you've got kids, it's not a bad way to amuse them for two hours. If not, no reason to make the trip.
