Unless you’re a shut-in (hey, we’re not throwing stones), a television series on DVD isn’t the most sensible $40 investment. But animated shows from Fox scoff at this notion, and King of the Hill’s first season keeps its nose up. Each disc is introduced by a different character, and a surprisingly comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the first season includes plenty of quirky details. Consider the show’s pilot, which consists solely of the real black-and-white pitch to Fox executives that creator Mike Judge assembled in which Hank Hill sells the story directly to the head of programming (instead of the complete episode ordinarily demanded of production companies by networks). There are original sketches of every character, and sit-ins during table readings provide a glimpse at how the shows played before final script. But perhaps the funniest feature is “Meet the Hills,” which offers definitive quotes from each character, Hank’s being “Nobody likes a know-it-all who sits around talking about their genitalia.” Different strokes
