This could have been just as funny as The 40-Year-Old Virgin if it hadn't treaded so deeply into sappy-chick-flick territory. Half the movie is a raunchy, dudes-hanging-out-being-dudes flick and the other is a Lifetime special on the joy and pain of having a baby. And it goes on for more than two hours. We're happy a guy like Seth Rogen, who seems the exact same off camera as on, succeeds as the most unlikely leading man; and Katherine Heigl is looking very hot, even with a horribly fake prosthetic stomach, which looks even worse on HD DVD. (Take our advice and opt for the regular DVD and thank us later.) But Knocked Up feels more like a riff that tries too hard by not trying too hard. It also seems like more effort went into the hilarious extras, which are packed on a second disc. There are some decent deleted scenes/alternate takes and great short featurettes, including the fake auditions of other possible Ben Stones (you may have seen these on YouTube) and the faux-hawked member of Rogan's stoner crew being guilt-tripped into taking a roller coaster ride and being completely terrified to the point of tears.
