It’s a wonder that Kung Pow didn’t just go straight to DVD. The movie consists entirely of new footage spliced into an old kung-fu flick—doesn’t exactly have “blockbuster” written all over it, does it? The DVD, however, provides quite a bit of entertaining extras. Writer, director, star, and kung-fu expert Steve Oedekerk’s explanation of how a blue screen works— “It’s a blue screen, and you walk in front of it”—is a not-so-subtle hint at the attitude he took in developing this marital-arts spoof. Watching the work he put into constructing the cow vs. man, Matrix-style fight scene is almost sad. Add in a tribute to the disturbing character Toungey and an option in the special-features section titled simply Groin Kick-O-Rama—yes, it delivers what it promises—and this is a DVD far superior to its big-screen counterpart.
