Nobody plays a besieged everyman better than Giamatti—not Nicolas Cage, not David Duchovny, nobody. But as a machine-gun-wielding heavy in the preposterously overcaffeinated Shoot 'Em Up, Giamatti exudes less a sense of menace than an air of true distress. You know, like, "Owww! This gun is really, really hot! Heavy, too!"
