The Golden Compass (2007)

The words "based on a beloved children's book series" had studio execs dreaming of Orc-sized paydays and Hogwarts-level hysteria. Too bad this overblown, overpriced turkey not only failed to generate more than a collective "meh," it also tanked hard enough to ruin New Line Cinema—the same studio that, four years earlier, was bathing in Lord of the Rings cizz-nash. No sequel for you!
