If so, then there’s really no reason to see Men of Honor. Sorry, but “based on the true story” doesn’t excuse the fact that this is a pretty routine “soldier defies the odds to succeed” movie. Cue rousing music and weepy, patriotic speeches. Robert De Niro phones in his performance and Charlize Theron appears for absolutely no reason. But, hey, at least Cuba Gooding Jr. has finally realized that being a Pepsi One shill and doing crap like Chill Factor was sending him on the express train to Marisa Tomei-ville. Men of Honor’s at least a step back to respectability.
