This academic documentary by a heavy metal lifer proves there's more to the loudest form of rock 'n' roll than volume, Satan, or worse, Dee Snyder. (Though all three subjects are broached over the course of the movie.) You can keep pounding your eardrums on the DVD extras, where you get a mini-documentary on Norwegian black metal, extended interviews with metal's finest (including the late Dimebag Darrell), and road outtakes of the film's crew as they travel from NY to L.A. to the U.K. The extras wind down at the bar with metal legend Lemmy from Motörhead, who sounds off on drugs, Grammys, and Norwegian moonshine. There's also a metal family tree that'll help you trace the genre's origins—including metal's embarrassing cousin, prog-rock.
