Miami Vice: Season Five

Release Date:

Star Rating:
★★★½
Here we are. The end of the Miami Vice road. (That assy Michael Mann movie doesn't count, damn it!) It was clear the '80s were winding down and pastel shirts and rolled up sport jacket sleeves weren't as cool as everyone thought they were. The show definitely turned darker, and lamer, at the end of the fourth season—Sonny as a bad guy? Say it ain't so!—but the final 21 episodes close out the show with as much dignity as could be mustered. It wasn't as good or important as it once was, but that's just because the earlier season set the standard so high. People often bag on Miami Vice for being cheesy, but it proved that a network show can have the soundtrack and visual that rivaled blockbuster movies. It's incredibly lame that Universal didn't include anything extra on this DVD set to help nonbelievers understand the importance of Vice. Instead, like the show, they just sent Crockett and Tubbs into the neon sunset without much fanfare. But at least this'll complete your collection.
