Irish men are volatile and drunk by nature, so throw a woman in the midst of an Irish gang rivalry and you’re going to have fireworks. Miller’s Crossing pits Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, and Jon Polito against each other, with Marcia Gay Harden only complicating matters, as they struggle for control over a small town. This release is one of those DVDs with scarce supplemental material that still delivers enough to make a classic movie a worthwhile acquisition. There’s a conversation with Barry Sonnenfeld discussing how he met the Coen brothers, how he got into film, and how big a dork he is (he didn’t talk as much about that last one so much as we used our inference skills). There are also cast interviews available with clip selection (like scene selection), so you can skip through rambling actors digressing about themselves and get to the goods—like Gay Harden admitting that the Coen brothers “are a little bit silly.” Good luck finding those kind of gems in regular interviews, chumps.
