You’ve gotta ask yourself, what were the makers of this movie thinking when they painted such a huge target on the head of this lame teen “comedy?” They might as well have called it Bomb. Loser is a painfully unfunny and generally uninteresting attempt to cash in on the American Pie-ness of its leads, Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari.
The story revolves around Paul (Biggs), a slightly backward kid from the sticks coming to the big city for college. He meets Dora (Suvari), who’s one of those great movie cut-outs: The trashy girl who works the graveyard shift at a strip club and bangs her professor, but still retains her innocence, as well as the requisite heart of gold. Paul is ridiculed by his three roommates (no need to list their names; these kids should be embarrassed after playing the three biggest tools ever committed to celluloid). Loser is populated with creepy, obnoxious, and thoroughly repellent characters that you’d cross the street to avoid in real life. Taking the cake is Greg Kinnear—his lubricious Professor Alcott makes Humbert Humbert seem like a kindergarten teacher. Amy Heckerling should get down on her knees and thank David Spade, whose two-second cameo provides the only chuckle in the movie.
