OK, let’s see…do we have everything? College setting? Check. Quirky characters? Check. Babes? Check. Hilarious antics and sidesplitting gags? Ummm…dude, I thought you were bringing those. Slackers, as the painfully original title should suggest, is as bland and underwhelming as an encore at a Sixpence None the Richer concert.

Some movies are bad in that they are infuriatingly stupid and offensive, but Slackers is more bad in the don’t-feel-any-reaction-at-all way. The jokes are nonexistent and the characters totally uninteresting (when one of your leads is the kid who used to do those annoying AmeriTrade ads, you’re pretty much done before you start), leaving nothing at all to hold your interest—not even bizarre cameos from Gina Gershon and Cameron Diaz. While the Diaz one isn’t so shocking (she’ll appear at your birthday if you’ve got the cash on ya), we can’t figure out how Gershon got hoodwinked into making an appearance. But the biggest crime Slackers commits is totally wasting Jason Schwarztman (who was so awesome in Rushmore and will do better work than this) and Laura Prepon (she’s smart and funny—how did she agree to play a pointless and unfunny slut?). The biggest cheat this movie can pull off is to actually trick people into watching it.
