It’s safe to say that the release of Like Mike signals the beginning of a new Golden Age of cinema. What more could a story need than the rags-to-riches turnaround of a young orphan who not only finds success and fame through a magical pair of shoes but a mentor and father figure along the way?

There’s the heartwarming—and totally believable—story of a big time basketball star taking the youngster under his wing and teaching him the lessons of life—not to mention geometry through the triangle offense! There’s the orphanage bully eventually warming to the little guy and helping him out in the worst of circumstances. There’s the loyal buddy feeling slighted with his friend’s new fame, only to end up in the same adopted family as his. The list goes on, but if there’s any one reason to go see this movie it’s because when you strip it down to its bare essentials, this is a film about the human spirit triumphing over adversity. That and the foreign basketball players acting—definitely go to see the foreign basketball players trying to act.
