Our idea of a good time usually wouldn’t include watching an artsy film about a trailblazing feminist artist set in the ’30s and ’40s, but if you’re gonna learn history, it might as well be from Salma Hayek. Frida is more about the lifelong bond between Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) and Frida Kahlo than it is about Frida’s life as an artist. Fortunately, we’re treated to Frida flesh (read: the gorgeous-even-with-a-unibrow Salma Hayek) quite a bit; she sleeps with Rivera first, then a few of others (including some women) when she discovers his infidelity. The downside: For the remaining two hours, we’re subjected to a tenuous relationship more akin to high school sweethearts than mature adults. If you want to impress a girl with your interest in both a) a movie she might actually enjoy, and b) a movie about a historical female figure, this is your pick. If you just want to see Salma naked, you dirty monkey spanker, save $4 and rent Desperado.
