Nineteen years after Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins, and Derek Smalls blew us away with their “pink torpedoes,” Tap is back! But wait—where’s Derek’s hair? David’s wearing loafers? Nigel’s playing the banjo? Welcome to A Mighty Wind, the latest mockumentary from Spinal Tap’s creator and former Tufnel, Christopher Guest. Following the regional-theater-themed Waiting for Guffman and dog-show-centered Best in Show, Wind features Guest and his former Tap mates Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as the Folksmen, a semiretired coffeehouse act who reunite, along with a few other ’60s groups (made up of Guffman and Show alumni), to stage a benefit concert. Wind then breaks into a series of stinky folk songs, painful reunions, and emotional breakdowns. This folkumentary might not crank it up to 11, but it sure ain’t no shit sandwich.
