There's something that feels very stale about the newest edition of the Scary Movie franchise. Maybe it's the 4 in the title, or simply that a lot of the movies spoofed here are less than iconic. (Wasn't The Village a joke to begin with?) Are ancient Michael Jackson child molestation routines, watching Carmen Electra take a crap in the middle of a crowded church, and the chance to see 80-year-old Leslie Nielsen in the buff really worth ten bucks? Directed by veteran David Zucker (Airplane!, Naked Gun), this film exists simply to grab some quick box office dollars and head straight to DVD. The opening scene featuring Dr. Phil cutting off his own foot in a Saw parody is mildly promising, but most of the film is taken up with a lame plot involving The Grudge and War of the Worlds spoofs. It's a sign that the writers didn't have a whole lot of good "scary movies" to spin off when the funniest bits involve Charlie Sheen ODing on Viagra and Craig Bierko's dead-on impression of Tom Cruise's meltdown on Oprah.
