Had The Ant Bully come out two months ago, before Cars, The Wild, Monster House, etc., it would have felt fresher. The visual style of this children’s book adaptation is stunning, and the vocal cast is full of stars (Nicolas Cage, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep), but this pedantic story about a miniaturized kid who’s swept into an art colony just isn’t compelling. Where Over the Hedge was smart and funny, this 'toon just talks down to its audience. Where’s the snap that the best of these movies have and need? Battle scenes are pulled off handsomely, but maybe it’s just that ants aren’t suited for the humanization they are given. We hate to say it, but they all look alike. Kids may love it, but even they may feel this film is old hat.
