The Pitch: An Alcatraz prisoner who’s gone mad after spending years in isolation (Kevin Bacon) is defended by an upstart lawyer (Christian Slater) after murdering an inmate.

What It Really Is: Loosely based on true events--Bacon’s character did exist and Alcatraz was at one time a real prison #Facts!--this is a really good mid-90s courtroom drama...set in the 1930s. Gary Oldman is ideal as the evil warden, but the most memorable aspect of this movie is Bacon. The guy owns the tortured and pathetic inmate. He’s so good you barely pay attention to Slater playing a lawyer impersonating Jack Nicholson. (You can’t handle the truth, Christian!)

The Academy Awards Suck Yet Again: Bacon should have been handed an Oscar the day they finished filming. But he wasn’t even nominated. Out of respect Nicolas Cage should give him the one he got for Leaving Las Vegas, since it’s easier to play a drunk. Also, Bacon is a billion times cooler than Cage.

Does Blu-ray Make a Difference? The film has a purposeful ol’ timey haze throughout, so it’s not razor sharp but it has depth and character. We have no idea what that means, but it sounds like something a home theater nerd would write when he’s got nothing useful to say. #MovingPicturesArePretty!

Who’s It For: People who love courtroom dramas, people who love prison movies, people who love watching people get tortured into madness...in short, people who don’t know what true love is. <end scene>
