Like a pirate who exchanges his peg leg for a receding hairline, Nicolas Cage sets out on a global hunt for National Treasure and is willing to fight through tough clues, tough guys, and tough dialogue to get it. Ben Gates (Cage) comes from a long line of treasure hunters bent on discovering riches buried by the Founding Fathers during the Revolutionary War, and the only clues are hidden in U.S. currency, the Constitution, and national landmarks. Gates and his gang (played by the hot Diane Kruger, the wisecracking Justin Bartha, and the old Jon Voight) are trying to beat a traitor from their camp (Sean Bean) and the FBI (headlined by Harvey Keitel) to the spoils. Each clue leads to another clue, and then another clue, and then another Cage eyebrow arch, until we get there. A pointless love interest and a gullible villain who'd have trouble keeping step with Wile E. Coyote drag the quest down. But the cross-continental goose chase delivers a fortune in action and a variety of MacGyver moments from Gates, leading to a guilty-pleasure action movie that gold diggers everywhere, from Anna Nicole Smith to the new Mr. Star Jones, can enjoy.
