The sixth and final season of one of the best-written shows in TV history ends with Joel Fleischman, the Jewish New York doctor, stuck in the middle of an Alaskan wilderness, repaying his medical school loans, forgoing his materialistic ways, and moving in with a tribe of Inuits. No longer the whiny, terrified brat, Joel noshes freely on seal blubber and transforms into a completely self-sufficient person who's, for the first time ever, OK with himself. To fill Cicely's void, Maurice hires Dr. Phil Capra (Paul Provenza), who brings his wife, another urbanite who wants to embrace the Alaskan frontier more than she's actually capable of embracing it. While Provenza's character wasn't nearly as interesting as Fleishman, there's still Maggie, Chris, Ed, Holling, and all the other characters holding the torch.
