Neil LaBute delivers two movies in one…and that’s not a good thing. In the modern-day fairy tale, sweet little Betty (Renee Zellweger), a befuddled small-town waitress, abandons her miserable life in Kansas to pursue her favorite soap opera character, dapper Dr. David Ravell (Greg Kinnear)—not the actor playing the character, mind you, the actual character. In the blackly comic crime thriller, two chatty hit men (Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock) scalp Betty’s hateful husband and pursue her across country with evil intent. Your fondness for Zellweger’s simpering naiveté is the best indicator of whether you’ll be able to tolerate the fact that the stories never fit together, no matter how hard the screenwriters try to make them.
