Overnight is the story of one aspiring Boston filmmaker who had it all, but blew it by acting crazier in front of Hollywood executives than Tom Cruise in front of Oprah. The documentary follows Troy Duffy from his improbable big break (Miramax bought his first script, The Boondock Saints, before offering him the director's gig and a record deal for his band) to his even more eye-popping demise (Duffy leaves Hollywood four years later having burnt every bridge in the business, with no distribution deal and no band). While it's mildly satisfying to watch this swaggering asshole get what's coming to him, his shtick grows tiresome before the credits, and heads, get a chance to roll. The extras are thinly spread, including two deleted scenes that further set up the impending fall of Duffy's immediate friends and family. The other feature is an interview with Overnight's directors—both of whom are former friends and business partners of Duffy's—in which they repeatedly insist that their film is not a revenge piece, but simply a cautionary tale that made them a ton of cash. And isn't that what friends are for?
