What It Really Is: An awesome animated flick. ParaNorman has a quirky sense of humor that will make you laugh along with the third graders in the audience, but it also packs an Up-opening-montage-sized emotional wallop. (And it’s unexpected, so be prepared.) Horror junkies will especially get a kick out of this one. From Norman enjoying a scary movie with his ghost grandma in the first scene to a car chase with a zombie, it puts a fun, kid-friendly spin on all the gruesome tropes we love. The voice acting is great and the animation is incredible. Basically, you should see it.

Studio to Watch: ParaNorman comes from Laika, the same animation studio behind Coraline. Their next movie isn’t slated until 2014, but given the general disappointment with Pixar’s latest efforts, we’re already marking our calendars.
