Before camcorders began providing concrete proof of police incompetence, Hollywood mocked it up and called it slapstick comedy. The original law enfarcement vehicle, Police Academy, is now celebrating its 20th anniversary. But where Mahoney and his mob rarely ran out of gags, this special edition’s packin’ light. A full cast of cadets reunites for group commentary—Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow, director Hugh Wilson, among others—which is only enjoyable when they’re pleading for work. (Which happens more than you’d think.) The only other feature, “Behind the Academy Doors,” rounds up the rest of the unit to bond over the franchise while lamenting the frightful current hairlines of Guttenberg, Winslow, and football legend/Hollywood extra Bubba Smith. And just like that, the bonus materials were over—along with the likelihood of any new IMDB listings for the cast and crew.
