When you think weirdo, it doesn’t get much better than Adam Sandler. His ticks and strange songs about lunch ladies keep you guessing, and now he’s taken the dramatic role of a lifetime as a weirdo who sells toilet plungers in the extremely strange Punch-Drunk Love.

Sandler plays Barry Egan, a man who discovers a loophole in a frequent-flyer miles promotion (based on the true story of David Phillips) and is working on cashing in. Only thing is, Barry’s lonely, and his situation quickly takes a turn for the worse when he dials a phone-sex line and becomes embroiled in a credit-card scam. Emily Watson, thankfully, shows up as his love interest and provides some stability and drive in his life. Each performance—including Philip Seymour Hoffman, who pops in as Egan’s foil—supports the film’s unsettling tone before its abrupt ending. Director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) blends the absurd with the real seamlessly, as Egan continues to fight against the numerous characters who fucked with him early on—and trust us, watching Sandler get mad in a dramatic film is much funnier than seeing him beat the crap out of Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore.
