Before Prince tried to become a symbol, he was simply an androgynous rock star with a thing for assless pants. Purple Rain was the original, effeminate 8 Mile underdog story, charting the cheeky one's rise, and the 20th anniversary edition returns to retell the tale with the help of his bandmates, early '80s rivals, and a shitload of purple velvet. "The Road to Pop Royalty" tracks the history of 1st Ave./7th St. Entry, the Minneapolis nightclub depicted in the film and the one that launched Prince and the Revolution. "Backstage Pass" walks through the movie with former tour managers, band members, Kurt Loder—anyone except for Prince himself. The Revolution also reveal how they put together the soundtrack, and you can check out eight music videos, including the title track. The 1984 MTV Purple Rain premiere party is included as it originally aired—which features the DVD's best moment: a young Darkness, Charlie Murphy himself, grinning shit-eatingly behind his shirtless brother during an interview. "Riffs, Ruffles, and a Revolution" explores the influence Purple Rain had on an entire generation, but judging by your chiffon dress shirt and four-inch heels, it's probably nothing you don't already know.
