There are corrupt cops in L.A. No way!

The Pitch: A selfish, depraved, drunken LAPD cop (Woody Harrelson) has his life and career go down the toilet when his corrupt deeds come back to collect.

What It Really Is: Unlike Training Day or The Shield, this is about one bad cop drowning in his own misery. It doesn’t go the distance of Bad Lieutenant, but it comes close on the comfort meter. Harrelson is very good as the chain-smoking-hard-drinking-drug-taking badge on the verge of collapse, but it’s too much of a random meditation on despair than a complete movie. Plus, how many times do we need to be told LA cops are shitty? We get the point!

The Real Rampart Scandal: For those who don’t know, in the late 90s there was a scandal that uncovered massive corruption in the anti-gang unit of the LAPD. This isn’t about that, even though the title suggests it by being called Rampart. Perhaps, for clarity sake, they should have called it After Rampart, but then some might have thought it was a sequel. We suggested No More Cheers to the producers but never heard back.

Does Blu-ray Make a Difference? Surprisingly, yes. Even though it’s not an action flick, the visual quality and colors pop like crazy. Speaking of which, remember the movie Colors? Sean Penn, Robert DuVall, song by Ice-T. Yeah, good times!

Special Features: Commentary with director Oren Moverman and cinematographer Bobby Bukowski; half-hour behind-the-scenes featurette
