We have to give the makers of Rat Race credit for trying to resuscitate the “All-Star Madcap Comedy” genre that petered out after Cannonball Run. But take a look at this list of names:

Breckin Meyer
Kathy Najimy
Rowan Atkinson
Amy Smart
Dean Cain
Paul Rodriguez
Whoopi Goldberg

Exactly. Where are the friggin’ stars? What is this, Hollywood Squares: The Movie? This decidedly low-wattage cast comes together for some inane romp involving a race to find $2 million in cash, orchestrated by a game John Cleese. There are one or two genuinely funny moments, which is more than we expected, but overall Jerry Zucker seems to have lost his knack and can’t quite wrest the torch back from the Farrelly’s grasp. Look for brief cameos from Seinfeld’s Wayne Knight and attorney Gloria Allred—on second thought, don’t bother. And one last thought: If Smash Mouth performs their song “All-Star” in one more movie, we will not rest until every soundtrack producer in Hollywood has crawled three miles over broken glass while gargling their own feces.
