Perhaps its the former high school football player in me, or maybe its just the low expectations that this year in movies has engendered for me, but I liked this sincere, albeit pushy, film. Based on a true story, the film centers on Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), football coach at an all-black (read: fun and funky) high school who is dispatched to take over the coaching reigns of a newly integrated, previously all-white (read: lame and boring), high school. Hyjinx, obligatory tragedy, and triumph ensue as Boone attempts to unite this black-white collective through the cross-cultural crucible of victory (are you buying this?).
Cornier than Nebraska, the film relentlessly hammers home the racial indignity and injustice of the postCivil Rights era, but thrives on its good cast, ambitious soundtrack, and some of the most adrenaline-pumping football action ever to leave Hollywood.
